We are seeking dedicated volunteers to provide tutoring and homework help in writing, English as a second language and other subjects to middle school and high school students at our South Bronx community center.

Students in grades 8 - 12 attend Masa's Youth Program on Wednesdays from 5-7PM. At the program, students primarily receive homework help, develop their writing skills, and begin to develop growth mindsets and goal-setting skills.

Requirements are as follows:

  • Ability to volunteer consistently on Wednesday (5 PM - 7 PM).
  • Able to commit to volunteering for the all or most of the 2016-2017 academic year (college students who will leave NYC in May will be considered).When working with students, consistency is the key to success!
  • Willingness and ability to serve as a tutor/mentor to students ages 14 through 17
  • Extremely positive, patient, and understanding; able to build rapport and trust with youth
  • Experience working with students in middle or high school, especially in an academic setting, a huge plus
  • Attend mandatory Masa trainings and events (provided advance notice and multiple options for scheduling)
  • Provide feedback on student progress and/or concerns to Masa staff.

Description

Masa provides after-school and mentorship services to students of Mexican descent living in or near the South Bronx. The organization relies heavily on the work of volunteers to serve the varied needs of students involved in the program.
