Mercer Island is graced with 35 parks, over 350 acres of open space, and more than 50 miles of trails. Popular among joggers, walkers, and families, Mercerdale Hillside Park provides an urban open space experience for residents of all ages. However, this natural area has become over-run with non-native blackberry, ivy, laurel and holly which threaten its ecological diversity and forest health. Volunteers have played a crucial role in the restoration of this local forest by working over the past few years to remove invasive plants, plant native conifers, and support the growth of these young trees. Volunteers will continue to help this effort by clearing invasive species in order to protect existing plantings and to create more room for the installation of more native trees and shrubs.
