Theatre Now New York, a non-profit theatre company seeks a Literary Assistant. This is a unpaid volunteer position with a part-time & flexible schedule.

Our mission is to create and develop new plays and musicals that challenge conventions and creates connections through our events and programs which includes our annual SOUND BITES Festival of 10-minute musicals (now in its 4th year), workshops and full productions.

The Literary Assistant position offers a great growth opportunity, learning the inner workings of a non-profit theatre company, building skills, gaining knowledge and developing networks. This could be an entry level position or a career transition. Also ideal for someone who wants to be a professional dramaturg, director, producer or eventually run the Literary Department of a theatre company. The Literary Assistant will be working alongside an experienced Literary Director producing the company’s events and productions, reading, workshops and other programming.

The Literary Assistant’s duties include but not limited to reaching out to playwrights, composers, agents & managers, seeing showcases and productions on a regular basis, keeping a database of possible future collaborators, reading and analyzing online theatrical submissions, brainstorming future theatrical projects, be willing to serve as a dramaturg for one of our productions or programs, working on the Sound Bites Festival, keeping a pulse on the industry, collaborating with the Literary Director, and having a voice when developing programming for the theatre company. Individual must be highly creative, motivated and willing to learn.

Theatre Now New York is a small non-profit company that focuses on the creation and development of new plays and musicals towards the presentation of fully produced shows.

Our flagship program is our annual SOUND BITES Festival of 10-minute Musicals now entering it’s fifth year. SOUND BITES offers a unique opportunity for talented writers, composers, and lyricists to showcase their work in front of audiences and industry professionals. Through an open submission process, Theatre Now New York selects the ten best 10-minute musicals or musical stand-alone excerpts which are then presented as a one evening event in NYC at an off Broadway theatre. SOUND BITES gives an exhilarating opportunity for artists of all theatrical disciplines at any point in their careers in getting their work seen and possibly developed further or even produced. Theatre Now New York is a consortium member of the West End Theatre, an intimate 87 seat theatre, located in the Church of St. Paul & St. Andrew on West 86th Street and West End Avenue. As a consortium member, Theatre Now New York has available performance slots throughout the year for our productions. This fall we are producing three full length new musicals that were created by writers we met through the past four years of SOUND BITES.
