ORGANIZATION: The Marine Mammal Center

The Marine Mammal Center is seeking an intern to join the Volunteer Services staff in supporting the Center’s 1,200 volunteers. The Volunteer Engagement Intern will gain valuable experience in non-profit and volunteer management and will be the primary organizer of the Fish Kitchen Support Volunteer Program; a program that involves coordinating over 500 short-term volunteers during the spring season. The intern will also assist with planning and coordinating the annual Volunteer Appreciation Week, a recognition week to honor our incredible volunteer community, and other tasks as needed.

This internship will provide an opportunity to grow in their professional development and gain valuable organizational, administrative, and inter-personal skills. Other benefits include the opportunity to work in a comfortable, friendly environment that includes over 60 staff and 1,200 volunteers who are all deeply passionate about marine mammals and ocean conversation. This is an unpaid internship position that reports to the Volunteer Coordinator and Executive Assistant. College credit may be available but the intern is responsible for submitting all necessary paper work.

The Volunteer Engagement Internship is a part-time internship and is located at our Main Hospital in the Marin Headlands in Sausalito, CA.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Manage the Fish Kitchen Support Volunteer program, including community outreach and recruitment as needed
  • Assist in planning and coordinating the Volunteer Appreciation Week
Other Tasks May Include:
  • Developing and creating content for the monthly Volunteer Newsletter
  • General volunteer recruitment
  • Assisting with volunteer trainings and the on-boarding of new volunteers
  • Helping maintain our volunteer databases
  • Analyzing the volunteer program statistics on retention
Intern Qualifications:
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Able to multitask and prioritize effectively
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience conducting research using the web and other resources
  • Detail oriented yet the ability to step back and review a process and make suggestions for improvement
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • The intern will be required pass a background check and sign a confidentiality agreement, due to the access to confidential volunteer information
  • Experience with data systems and data entry experience preferred
  • Previous experience as a volunteer is preferred
Intern Schedule:

Ideal candidates serve 2 to 3 days a week for approximately 16 to 20 hours for 6 months from March through June. We offer flexible start and end dates. Time off must be arranged in advance.
