During these uncertain times, how can we help?
See below to access our COVID-19 Resource Hub, and to explore our growing directory of both COVID-19-specific and virtual volunteering opportunities.
We are in unprecedented times with the COVID-19 pandemic affecting our communities. The Lake Merritt United Methodist Church (LMUMC) Food Pantry has been serving the Oakland community and the Alameda County for over 35 years by providing free food to individuals and families. The Food Pantry distributes fresh produce and nutritious shelf stable food (such as tofu, canned chicken, dried beans, rice and hot cereal). We are continuing the work of the food pantry with modifications to our typical procedures to ensure safety for volunteers and community members seeking food.
Food Bagging: Friday before distribution 1:30-3:30 pm
Food Distribution: Saturday (typically 4th Saturday of the month, holidays may vary) 7:45-11 am
Due to COVID-19 spread concerns, we are limiting the number of volunteers we typically have to run the distribution. When tickets run out on Eventbrite we have reached our maximum. If you are willing to be on call if a vacancy occurs unexpectedly, please select that ticket.
Friday Food Baggers: Volunteers are needed to bag food resources. While we typically gather over thirty volunteers each month, we will be reducing our operation to meet the safety levels of those gathering. Note that the work space allows for good social distancing and frequent handwashing.
Saturday Distributors: A few consistent volunteers are needed to hand out bags on the Saturday.
Language Interpreters: We are also seeking individuals who are able and willing to serve as language interpreters in the primary languages of the food pantry visitors including Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, and others.
Drivers: We are working on setting up a drop off system to enable seniors to shelter in place.
Please indicate if you are volunteering with a group, if you are also able to support as a language interpreter, food bagger, distributor, or driver.
Needs are subject to change.
Why and Impact
Hunger is a serious problem in Alameda County. 1 in 5 families in the county rely on ACCFB Agencies for food. Our Food Pantry fills an important need in the Lake Merritt area. An average of 430 families come for food each time, with an aggregate total for the year of almost 10,000 families. Last year, we distributed 127,910 pounds of food to these families, including 55,775 pounds of fresh produce. The ACCFB supplies the fresh produce free of charge and subsidizes the cost of the shelf stable food. We are staffed completely by volunteers from the church and community; students from several Oakland youth organizations volunteer regularly, as do a number of the food recipients.

We commit ourselves to: Serve the community; by our community we first mean the neighborhood surrounding our church, but we also mean prayer, action, and advocacy more broadly on behalf of our congregation, neighborhood, and world.
Lake Merritt United Methodist Church is an open and welcoming Christian congregation serving God in downtown Oakland. We seek to build a multiracial, multiethnic and multicultural community. We welcome and affirm full participation of LGBT people in the life of the congregation. We work to promote the inclusiveness of all people in the United Methodist Church as a whole.
The church serves this community, the people of greater downtown Oakland, and the global community with a wide variety of programs and missions.
We'll work with your schedule.
