The Morris County Historical Society invites anyone interested in local history, historic preservation, or 19 th century social history to attend our Volunteer Docent Classes this winter. These classes are being offered at various dates and times through the month of Feburary. (See below.) Managed and operated as a house museum by the MCHS, Acorn Hall is a historic home built in 1853. Home to a retired medical doctor, Acorn Hall was later redesigned as a summer home for the Crane family by 1860. This property belonged to investment banker Augustus Crane; Dr. James Leonard Corning, the father of the epidural; Alice Castleman, the daughter of a Confederate officer; and Mary Crane Hone, a Broadway starlet. The Hall, to this day, maintains much of its original fabrics, furnishings, and décor.
Docents learn how to give engaging, informative, and educational tours to a variety of audiences. The MCHS offers tours of our historic house museum Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and by appointment. Docents are scheduled on a monthly basis and are asked to volunteer at least one Sunday a month.
Docents must attend all 3 training sessions in order to become certified. To sign up for a session or for further information, please call the MCHS at 973-267-3465 or email MCHSAcornHall@gmail.com. Each session is limited to 10 participants, so please sign up early!

Morris County Historical Society preserves and promotes the history of Morris County, New Jersey.
Description
Morris County Historical Society a member-supported, 501(c)3 non-profit, and welcomes new members and volunteers interested in preserving and interpreting local history. Founded in 1945 and located at Acorn Hall since 1971, MCHS is one of the leading historical societies in NJ. Having recently completed the restoration of Acorn Hall and its associated carriage house to their authentic 1860-1880 appearance, we are now embarking on consequential county-wide history initiatives that are garnering significant state recognition.
Acorn Hall, our headquarters and historic house museum, is offered to the public by docent-led tour four days each week. These tours also include a guided look at our changing exhibits, which are developed from our vast collection of over 27,000 objects related to the history of Morris County and NJ. Programs and events, both virtual and in-person, round out our weekly offerings and provide our virtual and in-person guests with great insight into the depth and breadth of Morris County history and the incredible collection of historic resources we hold.
Our offices are open weekdays between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm. The museum is open to the public on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 am-4 pm, Sundays from 1-4 pm, and by appointment. If you'd like to volunteer for a dynamic and growing non-profit organization, please contact MCHS at MCHSAcornHall@gmail.com or 973-267-3465.
