Our AmeriCorps Vista members worked with ServiceWorks to develop and implement a youth service learning project and employability training modules. These Moduels will provide professional development, networking, and project management skills to young adults. This training will improve their readiness for a career or college. The training targets 16-24 year olds in the Washington, D.C. area, many of which are teenage moms, their friends and family.

We are looking for volunteers to facilitate one or more of the five modules listed below

1. Introduction to Service Works

2. Introductions to Capstone Projects and Goal Setting

3. Capstone Project Planning and Development

4. Communications and Networking

5. Leading Capstone Project

Groups are welcomed but not required.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Healthy Babies Project is to reduce the dangerously high rates of infant deaths, illnesses, and low birth weight, as well as improve the health outcomes for at-risk mothers and infants, by reaching out to high-risk, low-income, substance-abusing pregnant women and their families.

Description

The Healthy Babies Project is a drop-in facility where the staff works collaboratively with other community-based organizations and agencies to provide risk assessments; offer family support counseling and treatment interventions; create links to needed resources; and make referrals to medical and social services. Current programs include: a teen pregnancy program, an immunization program, parenting education, child abuse prevention, the FATHERS male mentoring initiative, substance abuse intervention and social service assistance.
