Position Description:

The Community Programs Coordinator VISTA will be an essential member of the team for this young non-profit organization. In cooperation with our partners, Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation is working to create new and innovative park-based programs that improve stewardship of our public lands. Our current programs focus on improving community health and wellness and developing community appreciation for the natural and cultural history found in local parks. The Community Program Coordinator VISTA will will focus on improving and expanding the scope of TMPF programs including the Truckee Meadows Trails Challenge, Discover your Parks Walks, Idlewild Health Walks, Parks Rephotography Project, and Junior Naturalist Program.


The mission of Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation (TMPF) is to support the parks departments operating in Truckee Meadows, including Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County parks. We do this primarily by providing in-park programming and opportunities for citizen engagement. TMPF is an independent, nonprofit organization that began operating in 2013. Our current programs focus on improving community health and wellness and developing people’s appreciation for the natural and cultural history found in local parks.


Service Location: Reno, NV


Timeline for Service: February 27, 2017 - February 26, 2018

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and expand the Truckee Meadows Trails Challenge program;

  • Expand the Discover your Parks and Idlewild Health Walk programs;

  • Strengthen the Rephotography Project by expanding and promoting the program;

  • Continue to develop and expand the Junior Naturalist curriculum and interactive activities with youth;

  • Develop effective volunteer training programs to engage community members in TMPF programs;

  • Collaborate with TMPF team to increase community outreach and engagement in programs;

  • Maintain existing partnerships and forge new relations with community partner organizations and stakeholders.


Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to TMPF’s mission and vision;

  • Bachelor’s degree;

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;

  • Exceptional writing skills;

  • Strong communication skills;

  • Strong organizational skills;

  • High degree of initiative and spirit of service;

  • Preferred: experience working with students, teachers, and volunteers;

  • Preferred: experience teaching in formal or informal settings;

  • Preferred: experience working at or managing summer camp programs.


AmeriCorps VISTA:

Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation’s Community Program Coordinator VISTA position is funded by the Corporations for National and Community Service and will serve within the AmeriCorps VISTA program. AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Each VISTA member makes a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. Member Duties:

The Community Program Coordinator VISTA will expand and maintain the Truckee Meadows Trails Challenge, Discover your Parks Walks, Idlewild Health Walks, Junior Naturalist Program, and the Parks Rephotography Project. The VISTA will also coordinate volunteer trainings to run these programs in order to increase program sustainability and build program capacity. This position will include maintaining relationships with partner organizations and increasing TMPF’s community outreach and inclusion.


Compensation:

In return for their service, AmeriCorps VISTA members receive a modest living allowance of $980/month, health benefits during their service, and have the option of receiving a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $5,730.00 or post-service stipend of $1,500.00 after completing their service. If moving to Reno/Sparks, a relocation travel allowance may be applicable, as well as a settling in allowance.

-Serve as fiscal sponsorship for community-led initiatives to enhance park infrastructure.
-Strengthen the bond between citizens and their parks.
