Must be at least 18 years of age. Youth between the ages of 15 and 18 will be allowed to volunteer after a waiver signed by a parent is on file.
All shifts are two-hours and volunteers will agree to work a minimum of six hours/month (can be combined with other volunteer activities to meet monthly minimum).
Must be strong enough to physically control all sizes of dogs safely.
Position requires basic knowledge of dog training principles, dog behavior and reading dog body language.
Must adhere to SRAS safety principles, regulations and guidelines at all times while in the shelter. Volunteer must be responsive to SRAS staff directives.
All new volunteers must attend volunteer orientation and level one dog behavior class before interacting with dogs. Volunteers who started before our classes implemented will be allowed to continue volunteering for up to six weeks. After that they will need to have attended orientation and class in order to continue.
First four hours of volunteering must be done under indirect supervision of staff or volunteer mentor.
After first two requirements completed volunteer will be considered a Paws one volunteer on Team Rescue Dogs and can walk and handle all dogs rated "easy" and "medium" if they feel comfortable. All dogs rated as "hard" will require that volunteer achieve requirements for being a Paws-two volunteer before handling those dogs.
