About Teach-In 2016: Each November, in celebration of American Education Week, Florida public schools bring our communities into the classrooms - in a fun and engaging way - to talk with students about academics, careers and the future.
About Evans High School, A Community School:
Community School at Maynard Evans Public High School isn’t just another high school. Or just a place to attend class. It reflects the hope of the Pine Hills Community, holistically serving not only students but parents and the community at large, its doors open early and late six days a week. It offers after-school tutoring, mental health counseling, mentoring, a parent resource center, a food panty, and much more. There’s even a wellness cottage right on campus, complete with primary care physician, nurse and dentist. All of this is made possible by a successful partnership among Orange County Public Schools, the University of Central Florida, CHS and other vital nonprofit organizations and community partners, including Heart of Florida United Way.
The students at Community School are the future of a community struggling to overcome cycles of poverty in all of its related incarnations. Many of them will be the first in their families to graduate with a high school diploma and move on to better lives with more opportunities. Because of what these students have accomplished, Community School transformed an "F"-rated public school into a "B" school in just a few short years after its inception. In fact, Community School has been so successful throughout its short history that it serves as a proven model for other community schools throughout the State of Florida and the nation. That means that, ultimately, if students at Community School succeed, students and communities everywhere can succeed.
