ORGANIZATION: YourWords STL

  • 9 people are interested

YourWords STL is a volunteer tutoring organization dedicated to teaching St. Louis youth how to amplify one's voice through writing.

We are seeking a dedicated volunteer to coordinate our growing pool of talented and enthusiastic tutors. Currently, we have one class per week with 10 regular volunteer tutors, and a second class, also with 10 tutors, that meets every other week. We also have a small pool of substitute tutors and receive 2-3 inquires per week from new candidates.

The tutor coordinator's roles include:

- Keeping the weekly online schedule updated

- Contacting substitute tutors to fill in if a regular tutor needs a day off

- Checking in on a bi-weekly basis with tutors to ensure that they have the resources they need to be successful in tutoring their students

- Responding to inquiries from new candidates for the tutor pool

- Schedule orientation and training for new tutors

- Research continuing education opportunities for tutors

These duties usually take 2-5 hours per week. The tutor coordinator may work at our shared office space at CIC @ CET or from home as needed. The hours are entirely flexible. Training will be provided, and the current tutor coordinator will work with the new candidate for the first several weeks to ensure a smooth transition.

Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions, and thank you for considering this opportunity!

Description

YourWords STL provides free creative writing programming and homework tutoring to young people in underserved areas of St. Louis. We partner with local organizations to provide workshops for their populations.

We partnered with Marygrove Children’s Home a therapeutic residence for children who have been abandoned or abused and have nowhere else to turn from 2015-2022. Starting in 2022, our tutoring has moved to Clay Community Resource Center in the Hyde Park neighborhood, offering tutoring twice weekly. The tutor volunteers work with students each week on homework as needed for school.

We provide stand-alone workshops with other partner organizations throughout St. Louis. Each year we bring students from various backgrounds together in collaborative writing projects. The tutoring we provide students, whether in person or virtual, becomes even more urgent and impactful, as disparities in resources grow in the wake of a pandemic.

YourWords STL is seeking volunteer tutors, willing to commit to 60-minute weekly tutoring sessions. We are seeking tutors from a variety of professional backgrounds, with strengths in math, science, English, finance, history, or political science, and we prefer tutors live in or near St. Louis MO. Thank you for taking the time to learn about us, and don't hesitate to contact us with any questions.
