The Adult Literacy Tutoring Program has the opportunity to place a part-time AmeriCorps VOCAL (Volunteer Outreach for Community Action in Literacy) member through the Literacy Volunteers of Illinois for the upcoming year. This member will provide a mixture of direct service to adult learners and support services to learners and tutors for 18-22 hours per week. It’s a great opportunity to serve your community and gain valuable experience and skills.

Title: VOCAL (Volunteer Outreach for Community Action in Literacy) AmeriCorps Member through Literacy Volunteers of Illinois

Classification: Volunteer Part-time (18-22 hours per week)

Living Allowance: $6,300, bi-weekly stipend

Education Award: $2,887.50 on completion of service

Time Off: 2-4 weeks

Term: September 2016 - August 2017

Through direct service to adult learners and support services for adult learners and volunteer adult literacy tutors, the VOCAL AmeriCorps Member will empower adult learners to acquire the literacy skills they need to be able to maximize their potential and succeed in their family, work and community roles.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Serve as a one-to-one and/or small group tutor for adults and out-of-school teens and maintain appropriate records delivering instruction in basic Reading, Writing, Math or English language skills

  2. Conduct diagnostic reading assessments for adult learners using the Student Achievement in Reading Diagnostic Assessments

  3. Coordinate and assist in the execution of program social events

  4. Assist with tutor training events

  5. Assist in the recruitment of volunteer tutors

  6. Coordinate content for the tutor e-newsletter

  7. Support data input needs for the Adult Literacy Tutoring Program

  8. Improve tutor management through the development of a Tutor Procedure Manual based on existing practices

  9. Assist in tutor reporting processes

  10. Assist with curriculum development

  11. Prepare and submit monthly program reports and other reports as requested by the Education and Literacy Service Department of the Literacy Volunteers of Illinois VOCAL Program

  12. Attend quarterly member meetings and participate in Days of Service as required by VOCAL Program

  13. Other tasks as assigned

    Education and Experience

  1. Two years of college minimum; Bachelor's preferred

  2. Previous volunteer experience required

    Skills

  1. Commitment to service and making a difference in the community and lives of others

  2. Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; Spanish a plus

  3. Experience in non-profit, education, adult education, or community development field a plus

  4. Flexibility and a strong sense of team spirit

  5. Basic computer skills; familiarity with MS Outlook, Google Forms and basic MS Excel or basic MS Access a plus

    Formal Training and Experience Provided to Member as Part of Position:

  • VOCAL AmeriCorps cohort trainings, meetings and Days of Service; 64 hours

  • Adult Literacy Tutor Training through Literacy Works; 12 hours

  • Diagnostic Reading Assessment; 6 hours

  • Other as Appropriate

    Physical and Mental Demands

  • Able to be on your feet and moving around for four hours at a time

  • Able to deal with difficult situations in a calm manner

  • Able to handle multiple tasks at one time

    Working Conditions

  • Work in an office setting

  • Work daytime, evening and weekend hours

  • Able to travel offsite to an event
