Position

The Board will support the work of Brighter Tanzania Foundation and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by BTF’s executive director (ED), the Board-ED relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Board Member responsibilities include:

Leadership, governance and oversight
  • Serving as a trusted advisor to the ED as s/he develops and implements BTF’s strategic plan

  • Approving BTF’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities

  • Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the executive director

  • Assisting the ED and board chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members

  • Partnering with the executive director and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out

  • Representing Brighter Tanzania Foundation to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization

Fundraising

Brighter Tanzania Board Members will consider BTF a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that BTF can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, BTF expects to have 100 percent of Board Members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity.

BTF is seeking a Board Member to serve specifically in the capacity of fundraising. This board member will be elected as the chair of the Fundraising Committee, and create a partnership with the Development Director in order to carry out the work of the committee.

Fundraising Committee

The Fundraising Committee's job is not simply to raise money. Instead, the Fundraising Committee is responsible for overseeing the organization's overall fundraising and, in particular, the fundraising done by the board. To accomplish this, its responsibilities are:

  • To work with staff to establish a fundraising plan that incorporates a series of appropriate vehicles, such as special events, direct mail, product sales, etc.

  • To work with fundraising staff in their efforts to raise money

  • To take the lead in certain types of outreach efforts, such as chairing a dinner/dance committee or hosting fundraising parties, etc.

  • To be responsible for involvement of all board members in fundraising, such as having board members make telephone calls to ask for support, and

  • To monitor fundraising efforts to be sure that ethical practices are in place, that donors are acknowledged appropriately, and that fundraising efforts are cost-effective.

Board terms/participation

BTF’s Board Members will serve a three-year term to be eligible for re-appointment. There shall be no appointment limit. Board meetings will be held quarterly and committee meetings will be held in coordination with full board meetings.

Qualifications

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about BTF’s mission and who has a track record of board leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. His/her accomplishments will allow him/her to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members.

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of BTF’s beneficiaries

  • A network of relationships suitable for recruiting donors to BTF, or gaining in-kind contributions to execute projects

Service on Brighter Tanzania’s Board of Directors is without remuneration.
