This volunteer opportunity is for groups: Groups can sign up for this ongoing opportunity to host and serve a meal at one of our affordable housing sites located all throughout California. Build community by serving and sharing warm, nutritious family-style meals and spending time with with low-income senior, family or special-needs residents. Volunteer groups commit to a minimum of 4 meals at the same property and must purchase all supplies needed.

Duties:

Volunteer group will plan a meal menu in consideration of total number of residents participating and their dietary restrictions. Purchase meal from restaurant/s. Deliver meal and all needed plates and utensils to site. Set the tables, serve food, sit and talk with residents and share the meal. Clean and clear community space on site, pack up all items brought.

Skills needed:

Some kitchen and serving experience preferred. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and a positive personality and demeanor. Able to approach and welcome all types of people.

Benefit:

Volunteer groups will have the opportunity to work closely together to problem solve, execute a fun event, spend time with new people, and help provide a healthy meal to low-income seniors or families.

Time commitment:

Volunteer groups generally commit to cooking and hosting a meal on site either one evening a quarter for one year, or once a month for four months.

Description

Eden Housing, Inc. is a California non-profit corporation founded in 1968 by six community activists who were concerned about the lack of non-discriminatory, affordable housing in Northern California. These volunteers began by rehabilitating older homes in Hayward for first time homebuyer families. In the mid-1980s, Eden Housing incorporated an affiliated property management company, Eden Housing Management, Inc. (EHMI), which currently provides quality onsite management and maintenance for more than 9,000 affordable homes throughout California. In the mid-1990's, Eden Housing expanded its scope to include the provision of free onsite support services and programs for its residents.Our services include technology programming; "green" resident education; youth academic, enrichment and recreation programs; programs for seniors and persons with disabilities; financial literacy; job/career preparation; and health and wellness programs for all ages.

Today, Eden has a portfolio of 9,000 units at 145 properties across 15 counties in California. Eden develops new construction and acquires and rehabilitates existing properties to preserve them. During the past 53 years, over 65,000 people have come home to an Eden Housing community. At Eden Housing, we have more than 20,000 households on our waiting list and a portfolio-wide vacancy rate of 1%, demonstrating a huge demand for our work.
