ORGANIZATION: Our City Forest

NOW HIRING for Enthusiastic Service Team Members

  • Serve the Silicon Valley for 2 or 3 months this summer
  • Full-time commitment: 40 hours per week (Tues. - Sat., shifts may vary)

Choose from:

  • 12-week positions begin June 14 and end September 3;receive a $4,000 living stipend and $1,527.78 education award (upon completion of term.)

  • 8-week positions begin June 28 and end August 20;receive a $2,500 living stipend and $1,222.20 education award (upon completion of term.)

Also recruiting for fall 2016:

  • 11-month commitment begins September 5; receive a$16,000 living stipend and $5,700 education award.

Position Summary:

Our City Forest (OCF) Service team members are sponsored in part by the National Service organization, AmeriCorps. OCF Service Team Members will be part of one of the following teams: Community Planting, Nursery or Lawn Busters. All members will:

  • be trained on best practices of maintaining a green and healthy urban forest in the Silicon Valley,
  • strive to maximize volunteer participation in their individual programs, acting as trainers, coaches, & coordinators
  • conduct outreach efforts to residents and businesses to garner investment and stewardship pertaining to our mission,
  • provide friendly, professional customer service,
  • actively seek opportunities for greening projects,
  • organize and implement projects,

Proportion of field to office work varies with program assignment. Depending on the team, some members may:

  • cultivate drought-tolerant plants and trees at our nursery,
  • plant and care for trees and shrubs in neighborhoods, schools and parks,
  • be trained in basic landscape design,
  • educate residents on best water-wise landscaping practices,
  • complete office tasks such as email correspondence, scheduling appointments, planning logistics, and detailed data entry,
  • participate in field work necessary for project preparation, and project day execution,
  • conduct classroom and community presentations, or
  • represent Our City Forest at various community outreach events.

For members who commit 12 weeks of service, they will either be on our Lawn Busters team or Nursery team. Preference is for those who have experience working with plants, irrigation, landscape design and/or customer service.

For members who commit to 8 weeks of service, they will either be on our Urban Forestry team, Lawn Busters team or Community Outreach/Volunteer Coordinator team.

Fall 2016 members will end up on either of the above mentioned teams and will commit to 1700 hrs of service.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • U.S. Citizen or legal resident, with a high school diploma or equivalent, minimum age: 18
  • Interest in affecting change through community organizing
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups of people
  • Must be available to work full time, 8:30am - 5pm, Tuesday - Saturday (shifts may start earlier, depending on team’s needs)
  • Must be able to commit through end of service term

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong written & oral communication skills
  • College degree is highly desirable
  • Local, South Bay Residents are preferred due to short term(Note: we do not provide housing)
  • Valid CA driver’s license. Proficient in driving manual transmission and towing small trailers
  • Current Commercial driver’s license (to drive Tree Mobile for community events)
  • Bilingual (multilingual) in English and Spanish, Vietnamese, or other
  • Familiar with ornamental and native tree species ID
  • Knowledge or experience working with irrigation
  • Experience with landscape design and/or landscaping
  • FileMaker Pro, Microsoft Office Suite, Arc GIS, Adobe CS, and/or Sketch Up software knowledge

Our mission is to cultivate a green and healthy Silicon Valley by engaging community members in the appreciation, protection, growth and maintenance of our urban ecosystem, especially our urban forest.

Description

The ultimate goal of the program is to facilitate the planting of one million trees in Silicon Valley, utilizing one million people. We have planted over 70,000 trees in San Jose, encouraging community members to join us in improving the environmental conditions of their communities. We focus on making a healthy urban forest accessible to all by offering services targeted towards disadvantaged communities because we believe a healthy environment should be available to all people, not just those who have the resources to access it.
