Only sixty full service grocery stores serve the 1.3 million residents South Los Angeles, compared to West Los Angeles with fifty-seven full service grocery stores for 11,150 residents. This has contributed to childhood obesity rates that have more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past thirty years . The percentage of children aged 6-11 years in the United States who were obese increased from seven percent in 1980 to nearly eighteen percent in 2012. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12-19 years who were obese increased from five percent to nearly twenty-one percent over the same period. SugarWatch, through access, education, and advocacy reverse this trend and make healthier outcomes a reality.
