SugarWatch provides opportunities and education for individuals and communities to make choices for an improved quality of life through greater nutrition and healthier living.
SugarWatch innovation lies in its multifaceted approach to nutritional education, access to healthy foods and advocacy in communities that will best benefit from wellness awareness and its importance.. More specifically, here’s how: we will seek reform by offering access to healthy food, education to best prepare it, and organizing and advocacy from within the communities we serve to address the injustices imbedded in the current school nutrition programs.
Only sixty full service grocery stores serve the 1.3 million residents South Los Angeles, compared to West Los Angeles with fifty-seven full service grocery stores for 11,150 residents. This has contributed to childhood obesity rates that have more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past thirty years . The percentage of children aged 6-11 years in the United States who were obese increased from seven percent in 1980 to nearly eighteen percent in 2012. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12-19 years who were obese increased from five percent to nearly twenty-one percent over the same period. SugarWatch, through access, education, and advocacy reverse this trend and make healthier outcomes a reality.
