Refugees come to this country after experiencing a life threatening situation in their own country. They often come from cultures very different from our own. We are looking for people who would like to help refugees and their families feel comfortable living here by helping them navigate their way around such things as shopping. The volunteer mentor works closely with the Mentor coordinator and the case manager to determine what is most helpful for the client. The volunteer must feel comfortable being with people who may speak very little English and the volunteer must feel comfortable going into their homes. Experience traveling or living in a Developing World country is helpful as is tutoring or teaching ESL. This is not required however, if the volunteer can demonstrate cultural sensitivity for people who are coming from different countries who have suffered trauma. A back ground check is done on all volunteers.
