Be an Ombudsman (advocate) for the residents of local nursing homes and assisted living communities, and help monitor the quality of care they receive. You could be the only advocate and visitor some residents receive. If you have good communication skills and a deep concern for the well-being of the elderly and disabled, you'll receive in-depth training and certification that will equip you to work with a nursing home's staff and residents in mediating problems that arise. Volunteer according to your schedule. Time commitment can range from a few times a month to once a week.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The Long-term Care Ombudsman Program is a federally mandated program wherein volunteers advocate for resident rights in nursing and assisted living facilities. It is jointly sponsored by city, county, and state agencies, with the lead agency being the Houston-Galveston Area Council and Area on Aging Ombudsman Program. Volunteers receive certification from the State of Texas, Department of Aging and Disabilities Services and are individually assigned to one nursing or assisted living facility. Volunteers have a wide flexibility in deciding whether the hours they put in would be on weekdays or weekends, during the daytime or early evening.
