Volunteer Job Description
Position Title: ESL (English as a Second Language) instructor
Reports to: Volunteer Coordinator
Purpose/Goal of Position: To support The Salvation Army in providing services to the community by teaching English to members of the downtown San Diego community who are learning English.
Qualifications/Skills/Certifications Needed:
1. Prior ESL Instructor experience or training required
2. Ability to maintain confidentiality and boundaries as required and appropriate
3. Strong interpersonal skills; Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse staff and participants
4. Bilingual in English and Russian preferred, but not required
Duties/Responsibilities:
1. Prepare a syllabus and daily lesson plans for each class, based on student needs
2. Instruct assigned ESL class for a minimum of a 3 month period
3. Counsel and support students in developing and accomplishing individual learning goals, as needed
4. Document student attendance, progress, and areas of need
