Tutor and Student
We believe that one-on-on tutoring makes all the difference!

This is a Virtual Tutoring opportunity through January 2021; we hope to resume in-person tutoring after COVID-19 restrictions are lifted*

Requirements for Tutors

Tutors develop one-on-one relationships, which makes this volunteer experience such a rewarding and worthwhile effort. STAIR has an excellent, user-friendly curriculum that makes it easy for volunteers to follow with no outside prep time and no prior educational experience.

1. Commit to tutoring a student virtually (on a video call or phone call) two days a week for 30-40 minute sessions.

2. Complete an online orientation.

3. Pass a background check.

*Please Note: We normally facilitate face-to-face tutoring in Birmingham, AL. With the uncertainty of COVID-19 and for the safety of our students and tutors, we will be doing virtual tutoring for the first semester but would like to resume in-person tutoring once COVID restrictions are lifted.

About STAIR OF BIRMINGHAM (Start the Adventure in Reading)

Location:

5th Avenue South, Suite 400, BIRMINGHAM, AL 35222, US

Mission Statement

STAIR's mission is to increase the reading skills and self-esteem of second graders through one-on-one tutoring.

Description

For 18 years, STAIR (Start the Adventure in Reading) has been on a mission to increase the reading skills and self-esteem of second graders in Birmingham. Reading on grade level by the third grade is the single greatest predictor of high school graduation and career success. Unfortunately, over 85% of third graders in the city of Birmingham did not reach that benchmark last year. Historically, through one-on-one tutoring at STAIR, students have doubled their reading scores after participating in the program.
