Mission Statement

At STAIR we know that students in our community are struggling with literacy. Through one-on-one afterschool tutoring, we empower students with the tools to read better and dream bigger, because every child deserves to be reading on grade level.

Description

For over 20 years, STAIR (Start the Adventure in Reading) has been helping Birmingham students "read better and dream bigger" by providing free one-on-one tutoring for 1st and 2nd grade students. By partnering with students and families, volunteers have an opportunity to come alongside their student in their literacy journey.

I have been a STAIR tutor (Hudson Elementary) and now serve on the Board of Directors. I have seen STAIR at work - and it truly works. And, I have seen the administrative structure at work - that, too, WORKS! The custom-written curriculum combined with one-on-one tutoring succeeds in raising reading ability of 2nd grade (and now 1st grade) students who struggle to master the basics of early reading skills. If I could, I would do anything to offer this program to as many students - in Birmingham and beyond - because I know it works. The satisfaction of seeing my student improve over the school year was tremendous - maybe as much for me as for him. I encourage you to become a volunteer today! Tutor training is usually in late summer. It is concise, just a few hours, but very well done. If you can spare one or two afternoons (roughly 3:30-5:00) a week to help a child get on the road to academic success, please DO! Thank you!
