Su Casa ~ Ending Domestic Violence
Board of Directors Position
LOOKING FOR:
Hands-On, Innovative Leaders Who Can Bring Creative Ideas And Passionate Solutions To Help Domestic Violence Victims And Their Families.
Su Casa ~ Ending Domestic Violence is a non-profit agency in Long Beach that provides assistance and advocacy to victims and survivors of domestic violence, FREE OF CHARGE. Founded in 1979 by Petra Medelez, a survivor herself, we help individuals and families live free from abuse in the hopes of breaking the inter-generational cycle. Unfortunately, 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. Our belief at Su Casa is that one right step leads to another and these steps lead to a Community of Peace!
HELP US MAKE THE NEXT "RIGHT STEP"
We are currently in the process of looking for a select group of new Board members. After many years of traditional governance and stewardship, the Board of Directors has decided to expand in order to generate a hands-on group of innovative leaders in our immediate community who can help bring creative ideas and passionate solutions to Su Casa. The objective is to identify highly effective industry and community influencers who will assist with public relations, fund development and civic outreach over the next few years. We are also seeking supporters that will serve as insightful collaborative Advisors and Ambassadors.
Su Casa's goal is to increase community awareness and offer more comprehensive & long term solutions to a problem that doesn't automatically "fix itself", and certainly not overnight.
HOW "SU CASA" MAKES A DIFFERENCE
In the past year, over 3000 individuals received services through Su Casa. This includes 186 shelter residents, 1,447 crisis calls, 65 walk-in clients and more than 1,300 local residents received educational presentations. All programs are run by highly trained and skilled staff.
Residents of the home-like, confidential Emergency Shelter live free from fear and violence for up to 45 days. The shelter provides emergency food & clothing, individual & group counseling, legal advocacy and safety plans. It also offers an on-site adult counseling and art therapy for the children. Families that have gone through the Emergency Shelter Program can then move to the Transitional Shelter. This 24-bed facility is the next step in the healing process and offers a refuge where victims can live rent-free for up to a year. Residents continue to receive counseling as well as life skills, parenting workshops, help with budgeting & household establishment and education & employment advocacy. They are required to save 50% of their income and must attend school or find a job. Children are enrolled in local schools and receive after-school tutoring. The ultimate goal is self-sufficiency and independence.
Other services provided by Su Casa include a 24-hour hotline for counseling, shelter information & referrals, a Walk-In Center, affordable permanent housing, crisis intervention, safety assessment, government program referrals and domestic violence education and awareness.
HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED
The topic of Domestic Violence has long been approached as a "crisis management" platform. Our approach at Su Casa is to empower the individuals and families to live free from domestic violence. By building and fostering partnerships within the community we are able to raise both awareness and funding so we can provide 24-hour support.
If you feel you can offer a unique and valuable perspective to these efforts, please contact us!
Without strong, compassionate and dedicated leaders, Su Casa would not be able to provide quality assistance in a safe, nurturing and healing environment to those most in need during the traumatic crisis of Domestic Violence.
