Get matched with a high school student who is struggling in math for one-on-one tutoring. Tutoring helps our students bypass the "remedial classes" they are often required to take when beginning college, which tend to act as roadblocks to success.

Who we work with
Our students are college-bound low-income youth of color who will be the first in their family to attend higher education. At Mission Graduates’ College Connect program, we provide our students with the support they need in order to successfully achieve a college education. Our math tutoring program helps address the college level "remedial classes" that first-generation students often encounter.

What are remedial classes?
Many first-generation students start their higher education with remedial classes and many of them are so turned off that they never finish. Statistically, only 1 out of 5 students in California who take remedial classes earn a degree within six years. Our goal is to have our students avoid these remedial classes and therefore reduce their expected graduation time from 7-8 years to 4-5 years.

Here’s where you come in
As a tutoring mentor, you will meet with a high school senior each week throughout their school year. We will train you to use our modular academic enrichment program that focuses on building math skills. Throughout the year we will support you as you provide a stable one-on-one relationship with your student.

Requirements for volunteering

Time commitment: this requires at least one hour per week to meet with an individual student for the full school year and possibly into the summer

Able to participate in Volunteer Training, dates and times to be determined. Training will be provided before starting position.

Tutor must be comfortable with Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Pre-Calculus.

  • Basic Algebra skills: positive/negative numbers, fractions, rules of exponents, inequalities, parallel lines & system of equations.
  • Algebra II skills: function of a function (Linear Algebra - Composite functions), log and natural log, asymptote of a function & vertex and roots of quadratic function.
  • Trig skills: special right triangles, Pythagorean theorem & Trigonometric ratios
