Do you enjoy history? Do you enjoy sharing it with others? Would you like to learn more about the rich history of Wilmington? If these things appeal to you, you have found the perfect niche at the Latimer House in downtown Wilmington!
We have a variety of opportunities for Volunteers as tour guides, research assistants, and computer assistants. We are happy to work with your schedule and welcome your sharing of your interests and skills.
The Volunteer Guides (Docents) at the Latimer House lead tours of the house and share the history of the house, the Latimer family, and Wilmington. Their responsibilities include greeting visitors and leading tours through the house.
Training, tour scripts, and background information are provided by the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society; prior to leading tours, volunteers have many opportunities to shadow trained Docents and do "practice tours" for friends and/or family. This is a terrific opportunity to learn more about the history of our wonderful area and to share it with others!
Do you enjoy walking, interacting with others, and learning more about the Historic District? Leading guided walking tours might be the perfect activity for you. Again, we provide scripts and training so that you will be ready to share your enthusiasm for our historic downtown with visitors and with locals.
Our research assistants work with our Archivist on a variety of projects. Would you like to learn more about a specific family, a period of time, an event, or something else that arouses your interest or curiosity? Then this is a wonderful opportunity for you.
Our computer assistants work primarily with our website and our communications. However, there are always other aspects of technology where your skills and interests would be welcome.
We look forward to hearing from you!
About Lower Cape Fear Historical Society
126 South Third Street, Wilmington, NC 28401, US
This corporation is organized to be operated exclusively for literary and educational purposes. To this end said corporation shall collect and preserve records and materials and disseminate knowledge and information pertaining to the history of the Lower Cape Fear, State of North Carolina, and the United States of America.
The Lower Cape Fear Historical Society was formed in 1956 by citizens wanting to "organize interest in the Lower Cape Fear and promote the history and the preservation of vital historic resources in the community and the Lower Cape Fear." The society maintains an extensive Archival Library containing many local historic documents and publications available to the public by appointment. People use these archival records for family genealogy, academic papers, and research projects. The Society promotes research of the area and publishes "The Bulletin" three times a year on researched topics, conducts Book Talks and presents lectures on the history of the Lower Cape Fear. Docents for the society conduct daily tours of the Latimer House and weekly walking tours of the downtown Historic District. The Old Wilmington by Candlelight tour and the Secret Garden tour are organized by the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society and are the major fundraisers for the year.
We'll work with your schedule.
