Refugee children face a tough uphill battle when resettling in a new country. Often times they've been out of school for extended periods of time and miss critical information in school subjects.
Tiyya, which helps refugee families with their basic necessities in Orange County, has an after school tutoring program on the campus of the University of California Irvine every Tuesday from 3:30 - 6 pm. The program is in conjunction with the student-led club called Fresh S.T.A.R.T., which brings awareness and outreach campaigns about issues facing refugees in Orange County.
Requirements:
Work one-on-one with children of refugee families to assist them with their homework. Ages of the children range from kindergarten to high school.

Mission Statement
We strive to provide community support and educational opportunities for families of refugees, immigrants, and displaced Americans. In doing so, we hope to create a community that fosters the development of self-sufficiency, ultimately helping our program participants overcome obstacles and actively participate in society.
Description
After being uprooted, starting over can be very challenging and emotionally consuming for refugees and displaced families. Newly arrived parents struggle to navigate a foreign system in which basic daily tasks, such as public transportation, doctor's visits, grocery shopping, etc., become challenges. Furthermore, they cannot provide their children the support they need to succeed in school and feel part of our community .
Tiyya is a grassroots organization that provides programmatic support for the whole family. Led by volunteers, our vision is to create a society that is compassionate and understanding of refugee experiences through developing relationships and fostering the public’s engagement.
