The Pet Food Pantry was started in 2012 when SAFE Haven for Cats noticed a need in the community to help those in financial distress. With this assistance, we are able to save lives, reduce shelter populations and end needless euthanasia by keeping family pets safe at home with their families and out of the shelter.

The number one reason that people surrender their pets is due to economic constraints. By providing food for dogs and cats, we’re able to give the guardian an opportunity to get on their feet and not have to surrender the family pet. For some people their pet(s) is the only family that they have and losing that pet can have a profound effect on a person’s mental health.

Participants apply online or in person to receive food for their cats, dogs, and even birds. All participants must provide proof of financial distress. They can receive the food for 3 months and are eligible to reapply for assistance in 6 months. The distribution takes place once a month and the pet(s) is provided with enough food to last until the next month.

Participant’s pets must be spayed/neutered and they agree to not acquire any additional pets while receiving assistance. SAFE Haven for Cats provides free spay/neuter for cats and dogs less than 15 pounds and also provides resources for low-cost spay/neuter programs.

The Pet Food Pantry gets no funding and is a part of SAFE Haven for Cats, a 501(c)3. All of the donations for the Pet Food Pantry go directly to those in need.

We exist because of the generous support of companies and individuals who care about animals and the love and joy pets bring. If you are fortunate enough to have a dog or cat for a friend and companion, then you understand how important animals are. Your donation will help keep people and their pets together, preventing the hunger, suffering, abandonment, surrender and loss of the animals they love.

Last year we distributed over 12 tons of food and served 279 cats and 122 dogs. SAFE Haven Pet Food Pantry is the Triangle's only food bank for pets.

Mission Statement

The mission of SAFE Haven for Cats is to use no-kill principles and education to save cats’ lives through rescue, adoption, spay/neuter services and community programs.

Description

SAFE Haven for Cats (a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization) was founded by Pam Miller and her family in 1994 in Raleigh, North Carolina. The shelter was first located in her two-car, 500-square-foot heated and air conditioned garage. The first 400 cats were adopted from that garage. Five years later, in October 1999, SAFE Haven moved and opened the first permanent no-kill shelter for cats in the Triangle region of North Carolina.
