Patient Services Volunteer
Hospice of SWVA serving Smyth, Wythe, & Bland Counties in Virginia

The Patient services Volunteer will be responsible for providing patient services support services to patients and their families, to the professional staff, and to the organization.The patient services volunteer will have a special commitment to the patients and families at the most difficult time in their lives.The patient services volunteer will provide essential support in direct patient care, support for family members, office assistance, and many other areas.Patient services volunteers must embody the essence of hospice philosophy, and are essential to the successful operation of any hospice program.Patient services volunteers may choose the area in which they prefer to function and the hours they are willing to donate.The patient services volunteer must possess the abiity to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his/her age specific needs.Provide emotional support to patients and familiesProvide practical support to patients and families (including household tasks, cooking, yard work, grocery shopping, etc.)Provide respite for caregivers

The 468,000 plus hospice volunteers at work in hospices throughout the U.S. are an essential part of the hospice philosophy of care which recognizes that dying is not just a medical event but a personal one as well. In fact, federal law requires that at least 5% of patient care hours be provided by volunteers (if the hospice receives Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement.)
