Zoo Crew (Between the ages of 13 and 17 only)
This summer, do something rewarding, fun, and different; Volunteer at the Zoo!
Zoo Crew is a special opportunity for youth ages 13-17 to get involved at the Blank Park Zoo!
Ever wondered what it’s like to work at zoo? Have an interest in Animal Science, Biology, or Education? Then this is the opportunity for you!
Zoo Crew members have the opportunity to volunteer in a variety of areas around the zoo.
Some areas include: assisting Summer Safari camp counselors with preschool campers, providing guests information about the zoo as guest service and exhibit guides, and keeping the zoo beautiful. Zoo Crew volunteers are also encouraged to volunteer during family friendly special events!
How do I get started?

2020 Application deadline for all NEW Zoo Crew applicants is March 1 st. Late applications will not be accepted.

Step 3: Attend Orientation
Step 4: Attend one day of training
Mandatory Dates for Zoo Crew 2019:
All Zoo Crew are required to attend the following dates, there are no makeup dates.
Interviews: April 4 & April 7
1st Year Zoo Crew Orientation: Sunday, April 26th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm
1st Year Zoo Crew Training Day (must attend one): June 3rd or 4th 9:00 - 3:30
FAQs
What are the ages for Zoo Crew?
Zoo Crew volunteers are 13-17 years old. You must be 13 by June 1 st in order to apply.
When do I volunteer?
Zoo Crew is active primarily in June, July, and August; however we will have limited opportunities for you to volunteer during the rest of the year.
Do I have to volunteer a minimum number of hours?
Yes, all new Zoo Crew volunteers must commit for a minimum of 40 hours from June - December.
Do Zoo Crew volunteer hours count towards Silver Cord?
Yes! It is your responsibility to provide the paperwork and keep track of your hours.
Who schedules my hours?
You do! You and your parents sign up for the shifts that fit your schedule best. Remember, once you sign up for a shift you are expected to show up.
How much does it cost?
Zoo Members - $35.00 Non Zoo Members - $40.00
This cost includes a t-shirt, water bottle, training, and Informational handbook.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Blank Park Zoo is to inspire an appreciation of the natural world through conservation, education, research, and recreation.
Description
The Blank Park Zoo is located in Des Moines, IA and manages 49 acres of land. Of that, 22 acres have been developed into animal exhibits or facilities.
Currently there are 104 different animal species and 1,484 animal specimens cared for at the Blank Park Zoo.
Individuals age 18 and over may volunteer for most special events, visitor services, office support, and grounds without adult supervision. Children ages 13-17 may participate in special events only under the supervision of a parent/guardian. Education volunteers must be 18 or older.
ZooCrew is a special volunteer program for teens 13-17 years old. Applications are accepted until April 27th for the 2012 summer.
