Managing the monthly bills can be overwhelming and cumbersome for anyone. For a senior who may have no one who can assist, when bills are left unpaid and piling up, life can have serious consequences. If you know how to balance a checkbook and pay bills, then consider becoming a Bill Payer volunteer. Play a vital role in helping seniors continue to live independently at home.
Work with a senior in your community to help manage monthly bills, prepare checks and balance his or her checkbook
Review bank statements
Compile a detailed monthly report of your activities
Strong organization skills
Possess compassion, patience and empathy for older adults
Desire to help
Ability to maintain confidentiality of financial information
Meet background check and fingerprint requirements
Attend a DFTA Volunteer Information Session
Ability to speak languages other than English desired (preferably Spanish, Russian or Chinese), but not required
General training on working with senior clients and money management will be provided
Volunteers serve any day of the week
Hours are flexible to allow for a mutually convenient time for the volunteer and client to meet
On average, volunteers serve once a month for approximately 4 hours
