Bill Payer Volunteer: Help Seniors Manage Monthly Bills

At this time, Bill Payer is only recruiting for Russian speaking volunteers. Please contact the DFTA Volunteer Resource Center for more information if you are a Russian speaker and interested in volunteering with Bill Payer.

Managing the monthly bills can be overwhelming and cumbersome for anyone. For a senior who may have no one who can assist, when bills are left unpaid and piling up, life can have serious consequences. If you know how to balance a checkbook and pay bills, then consider becoming a Bill Payer volunteer. Play a vital role in helping seniors continue to live independently at home.

Tasks:

  • Work with a senior in your community to help manage monthly bills, prepare checks and balance his or her checkbook
  • Review bank statements
  • Compile a detailed monthly report of your activities

Requirements:

  • Strong organization skills
  • Detail-oriented
  • Possess compassion, patience and empathy for older adults
  • Desire to help
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of financial information
  • Meet background check and fingerprint requirements
  • Attend a DFTA Volunteer Information Session

SkillsPreferred:

  • Ability to speak languages other than English desired (preferably Spanish, Russian or Chinese), but not required

Training:

  • General training on working with senior clients and money management will be provided

TimeCommitment:

  • Volunteers serve any day of the week
  • Hours are flexible to allow for a mutually convenient time for the volunteer and client to meet
  • On average, volunteers serve once a month for approximately 4 hours
  • Minimum one year commitment strongly requested

Description

Aging Connect assists Older New Yorkers with getting connected with age-inclusive services, resources, and opportunities available to them from NYC agencies, senior centers, and other aging-related organizations. During the COVID-19 Crisis, Aging Connect has served as the primary contact and connector for older adults and the families in need of food, services, and information about senior center closures.
