Literacy photo--empathy

Research tells us that if a child cannot read proficiently by the 3rd grade, he is five times less likely to graduate from high school. Those are the odds we are working hard to change! With just an hour per week, you can tutor a student and help ensure each child reaches this critical milestone.

The San Francisco Education Fund's Literacy Program brings volunteers into five of San Francisco's highest-need elementary schools. We are currently recruiting volunteers to tutor students in reading or help teachers during their literacy block.

Every student deserves the chance to succeed--you can be the caring adult who makes all the difference! The commitment is 1-2 hours of week. We train all of our volunteers. No teaching experience is necessary.

The San Francisco Education Fund's programming focuses on one goal: improving student success in San Francisco public schools. Description

The San Francisco Education Fund believes that strong
public schools are critical to San Francisco's viability and that the community must take action to ensure their success. By acting as a bridge between the community and the classroom, the Education Fund increases the availability and impact of resources for students and teachers throughout San Francisco public schools.

Our integrated approach:

  • supports teachers with training and resources to enhance their classroom practice;
  • matches volunteer skills with teacher requests;
  • engages students to create positive changes in their schools;
  • unites families, service providers, businesses and others to build stronger school communities; and
