Are you passionate about making a difference and spreading the joy of reading? The Aunt Mary's Storybook Project is seeking a dedicated volunteer. Join us in creating a bridge of stories that incarcerated people with the children most important to them, bringing hope and happiness to families.

Your Role in the Storybook Project:

  • Help Select & Share Stories: Help incarcerated people (our participants) choose a book from our inventory for each one of the children most important to them (their own children, stepchildren, nieces, nephews, brothers, and sisters).
  • Assist in Heartfelt Readings: Guide participants in reading and recording stories for the kids, creating lasting memories.
  • Bring Your Muscle Power: Ability to lift and move bags of books weighing up to 15 lbs, playing an essential part in the heart of our story distribution efforts.
  • Collaborate with a Purpose: Work alongside our team to ensure a smooth and impactful program.

What We Need in Our Heroes:

  • Ready to commit for at least one (1) year starting in ~July/August 2024.
  • Empathy with a Dash of Assertiveness: Have a heart as big as the sky and the gentle assertiveness of a wise mentor. Your skill in empathetically guiding participants, while keeping sessions focused and productive, is crucial in creating meaningful reading experiences.
  • Detail Detective: Harness your superpower of noticing the little things on handwritten forms. Your attention to detail ensures every story is perfectly prepared, enriching the connection between the reader and their loved ones.
  • Pass a background check. Depending on certain factors, individuals impacted by the criminal legal system may be able to volunteer.
  • Have reliable transportation.
  • Capable of lifting 15 lb bags of books.

  • Bilingual Storyteller: Are you fluent in Spanish? Your linguistic talents can help us weave stories across more communities!
  • Compassion Captain for Incarcerated Families: Your insights from working with families affected by incarceration are invaluable in guiding our compassionate outreach.
  • Group Guidance Guru: If you’ve got a knack for facilitating groups, your leadership can help create dynamic and impactful sessions.
  • Social Services Superstar: Got experience in social services? Your skills and insights can supercharge our mission!

Send new books to the children of prisoners with a recording of the parents reading the stories.

Send mail to prisoners including Christmas and birthday cards/personal correspondence.

Provide stationery at Mother's Day so families can communicate with each other.
