What: The ABG program is recruiting for the 2016-2017 school year. Volunteers will work with students in classrooms affiliated with the Juvenile Court and Community School system (JCCS). JCCS serves at-risk teens who have overcome a number of challenges such as homelessness, delinquency issues, foster care system and teen pregnancy/parenting. Volunteers will team-facilitate book discussions in-class on a montly basis from October through June/July (dependent on school site).
Goal: Increase vocabulary, reading level, literary analysis, critical thinking and class participation. Provide students with educational and emotional support.
Skill Sets: We are looking for volunteers who are voracious readers, enjoy working with adolescents and are interested in engaging students in the classroom setting. Must be sensitive to the student's backgrounds and insights. Must also be flexible to the JCCS system as curriculum and dates often are in flex.
Time Commitment: As an ABG Volunteer, you will be tasked to attend a one-time 1-hour facilitator training*; 1-hour kick-off meeting with the teacher and fellow volunteers; read the books each month (October-June/July); and attend a 1.5 hour session each month (date/times TBD).
