What: The ABG program is recruiting for the 2017-2018 school year. Volunteers will work with students in classrooms affiliated with the Juvenile Court and Community School system (JCCS). JCCS serves at-risk teens who have overcome a number of challenges such as homelessness, delinquency issues, foster care system and teen pregnancy/parenting. Volunteers will team-facilitate book discussions in-class on a monthly or bi-monthly basis from October through June/July (dependent on school site).

Goal: Increase vocabulary, reading level, literary analysis, critical thinking and class participation. Provide students with educational and emotional support.

Skill Sets: We are looking for volunteers who are voracious readers, enjoy working with adolescents and are interested in engaging students in the classroom setting. Must be sensitive to the student's backgrounds and insights. Must also be flexible to the JCCS system as curriculum and dates often are in flex.

Time Commitment: You will be reading young adult literature each month, preparing book discussions with your team, and attending the discussion sessions - 1.5 hours each. There is a required two-hour training during the summer, and a one-hour session kick off at your school site.

*training is held at the Words Alive office; all sessions and other meetings held onsite in the classroom.

Interested? If you are interested in this program or know of someone that may be interested, please contact Erin Rexin at Erin@wordsalive.org at your earliest convenience.
