Volunteers are needed to work with 5th - 9th grade boys and girls in a structured classroom setting at the Greg Kelser Basketball Camp. "Short-Term Mentors" will work with 3-5 students on fun, hands-on activities based around goal setting, positive attitude, team work. Volunteers will receive a training email to prepare for the class. Please note, volunteers for the Greg Kelser Camp will be working as a mentor in the classroom and not as a basketball coach.

Watch this quick video highlighting what mentors do in the session. Winning Futures supplies all of the activities and supplies and is on-site to run the program.

Mission Statement

We help Metro Detroit students by providing the motivation, support, and skills needed to graduate from high school and become self-reliant adults.

Description

We help Metro Detroit students figure out what they’ll do after high school, then teach them the skills necessary for success. Career mentors are volunteers who coach our students as they navigate through the program. Sessions are held at a participating school, during regular school hours, and in a classroom with staff, teachers, students, and other career mentors present. Each session starts with a staff member who teaches a lesson. Then career mentors participate with students in a fun and structured activity that reinforces the lesson. Topics include career exploration, job and life skills development, academic and career planning, and goal setting. Sessions are held two or three times a month from November through May. Career mentors receive training before the program year starts and support before and during every session. 90 percent of our students are people of color. Participating schools are in Detroit, Harper Woods, Warren, Sterling Heights, and Pontiac. Get more information or apply online at Winning Futures.org.
