Winning Futures, a local school-based mentoring program, needs judges to help us award scholarships to deserving students! We have two different opporutunities for you... Winning Futures Scholarship Essay Judge: Judges will read 10-20 applications (this is designed as a question and answer format versus the students writing five-page essays). You will score them with a scoring outline we provide. This takes place at our office in Warren (12 Mile Road and Ryan Road) on Tuesday, April 22nd 8:15 am. It will take two to three hours. 2 - Interview Judge: judges will interview 10 - 20 students (in ten minute increments) at the students’ high school on a set day and time. Judging teams will consist of a Winning Futures staff member and three volunteer judges. We will supply the questions and score sheets. Judging will be 2-3 hours. (Note: Mentors cannot judge at the school they volunteer at.)

We help Metro Detroit students by providing the motivation, support, and skills needed to graduate from high school and become self-reliant adults. We do this through an evidence-based program that helps students figure out what they'll do after high school, teaches them important life and job readiness skills, and provides the support and guidance needed for success. Career Mentors are volunteers from the business community who coach students as they go through the program, answering their questions, and providing encouragement. Learning sessions are held at a participating school, during regular school hours, and in a classroom with staff, teachers, students, and other Career Mentors present. Each session starts with a staff member who teaches a 10-15 minute lesson. Then Career Mentors participate with students in a fun and structured activity that reinforces the lesson. Topics include career exploration, strengths and weaknesses identification and analysis, emotional intelligence, perseverance, academic and career planning, and goal setting. Sessions are held two or three times a month from November through May. Career mentors receive training before the program year starts and support before and during every session. Participating schools are in Detroit, Harper Woods, Warren, Sterling Heights, and Pontiac. Get more information or apply online at WinningFutures.org.
