The Orange County Social Services Agency (SSA) operates under the policy direction of the Orange County Board of Supervisors and the California Departments of Social Services and Health Services. SSA is responsible for planning, implementing, and operating many of the social services programs provided by the County of Orange.

Minimum Age to Volunteer:

Teens and young adults between 16 - 19 years of age may apply. NOTE: No exceptions to age requirements.

Locations to Schedule Volunteer Shifts:

Several office locations are available throughout Orange County.

Volunteer Duties/Responsibilities:

Under close supervision, volunteers will assist clerical staff with tasks such as opening, sorting and processing mail; filing; basic data entry/word processing; photocopying; reception backup; lobby assistance; packet stuffing; faxing; preparing training packages; training room preparation and clean-up; escorting trainees to classroom; boxing up legal folders for closed files; setting appointments; answering phones; working in the store room and forms room; and various other clerical duties.

Volunteers will work in a safe, well-supervised office environment and will perform age-appropriate duties. Since volunteers may have some contact with clients and/or confidential information, they will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement. A parent/guardian will also be required to sign the agreement if the volunteer is under the age of 18.

Skills or Qualifications Needed:
Volunteers must demonstrate a positive attitude and a willingness to process information and learn new procedures in order to provide better service to SSA customers. Basic computer and customer service skills are helpful in this position. Additional qualifications include, data entry skills; ability to lift up to 20 pounds; good communication skills; ability to follow directions; and good interpersonal skills.

Time Commitment:
The Volunteer Work Experience Program operates for six weeks from July 8 to August 16, 2019. If a volunteer wishes to schedule hours beyond August 16, special arrangements may be made at the discretion of the work site. There is no minimum time commitment; however, volunteer hours must not exceed 20 hours per week. Volunteer schedules must be coordinated with the work site supervisor.
