Upwardly Global in Action
Mock Interviews

Today there are 1.5 million college-educated, work authorized immigrants, refugees and asylees living in the United States who are either unemployed or underemployed. In their home countries they were educators, bankers, lawyers, engineers, scientists, doctors and non-profit professionals. In the US they are currently working as nannies, cabdrivers, janitors, security guards and gas station attendants. Upwardly Global www.upwardlyglobal.org started in San Francisco, is a progressive non-profit that works to integrate these legal, underemployed immigrant professionals into the workforce and reclaim their careers in the US.

Upwardly Global mentors play a crucial role in assisting our jobseekers to help rebuild their careers and to impact the lives of those in need. Mentors provide encouragement, support and professional advice to these highly qualified and motivated individuals. Mentors help our jobseekers practice and improve their interviewing and networking skills, as well as share first-hand experience in the field of their expertise. Mentors need to have at least two years of professional experience in the US. They do not need to speak a second language.

4-5 hours monthly commitment.

Description

At Upwardly Global, we strive for more modern approaches to nonprofit work and to funding the work we do. Below is a list of our current opportunities:

1. Mock Interviews

A mock interview emulates and resembles a real interview that increases our candidates' confidence, skills and interview techniques. Volunteers will practice and enhance their cross-cultural communication skills such as coaching, providing feedback, and interview methods. A brief training is provided covering interview structure and giving culturally competent feedback.

Preferred Experience: 5+ years of professional experience

2. Networking Tips

The purpose of this activity is to help Upwardly Global candidates practice their networking skills and to provide them with tools and techniques to build a professional network. Volunteers and Upwardly Global candidates will be in groups to discuss tips for successful business networking.

3. Conduct Informational Interviews

Host an Upwardly Global candidate for an Informational Interview, over the phone or in person, and help them understand the intricacies of pursuing a career within your industry or your company in the U.S. This allows for Upwardly Global candidates to practice and enhance their networking, builds confidence in creating a professional network and leverages your knowledge of your professional field.
