Mission Statement

Upwardly Global is an internationally recognized, nonprofit organization with a mission to eliminate employment barriers for skilled immigrants and refugees and integrate this population into the professional U.S. workforce. Our vision is a United States where skilled new Americans are a recognized and valued source of talent. College-educated, work authorized immigrants and refugees represent 1.5 million people, a significant pool of untapped human capital. They bring with them education, experience, skills and an eagerness to contribute to their new community. The global diversity of our culture is an enormous strength and creates a unique nation.

Description

At Upwardly Global, we strive for more modern approaches to nonprofit work and to funding the work we do. Below is a list of our current opportunities:

1. Mock Interviews

A mock interview emulates and resembles a real interview that increases our candidates' confidence, skills and interview techniques. Volunteers will practice and enhance their cross-cultural communication skills such as coaching, providing feedback, and interview methods. A brief training is provided covering interview structure and giving culturally competent feedback.

Preferred Experience: 5+ years of professional experience

2. Networking Tips

The purpose of this activity is to help Upwardly Global candidates practice their networking skills and to provide them with tools and techniques to build a professional network. Volunteers and Upwardly Global candidates will be in groups to discuss tips for successful business networking.

3. Conduct Informational Interviews

Host an Upwardly Global candidate for an Informational Interview, over the phone or in person, and help them understand the intricacies of pursuing a career within your industry or your company in the U.S. This allows for Upwardly Global candidates to practice and enhance their networking, builds confidence in creating a professional network and leverages your knowledge of your professional field.

Volunteering with Upwardly Global is incredibly rewarding and inspiring. I so enjoy the opportunity to work one on one with individuals from all over the world. Aside from helping with resumes and interview practice, I have mentored an individual and seen, firsthand, the powerful results that Upwardly Global can achieve with the help of dedicated volunteers. I have worked with many nonprofits and Upwardly Global is refreshingly entrepreneurial in its approach and holds itself accountable for real results.

I volunteer for Upwardly Global in both the Chicago and New York offices. I cannot recommend the organization more highly! As a volunteer, I have been able to work with incredibly talented, experienced, and interesting individuals. I have gained so much from getting to know these people. I now have a better understanding of international cultures and issues. I now have an expansive professional network of diverse contacts. And I now have friendships with people I otherwise would not have had the chance to meet. Not only that, but the opportunity to hone my own professional skills and exchange experiences and advice with other professionals is invaluable. Upwardly Global really has their act together. Every volunteer event has been perfectly planned and executed. The immigrants/refugee/asylee professionals are unique and amazing, and I am so happy to have found such a great organization!
