Volunteer Lighthouse Keeper Opportunities!!

All along beautiful Lake Michigan

The purposes of our volunteer keeper program are:

  1. to preserve and restore the lighthouses under our care
  2. to give people an opportunity to visit the lights and climb the towers
  3. to educate our guests about Michigan’s maritime history
Day keeper opportunities at Little Sable on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 am to 5 pm. Dates are available May 24th through Sept 22nd 2019. Work with the local group of Seekers who operate this lighthouse and keep it open to the public.

Little Sable Point: Located in the Silver Lake State Park in Mears,we are looking for day keepers of Little Sable. tasks that the volunteers may work on include but are not limited to sharing historical information with visitors, keeping the grounds clean and lighthouse clean, handle money from tours, and have fun!

To be a volunteer one must be a member of Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association. Along with member application, the volunteer application and expectations/regulations will need to be filled out, which can be found on our website, www.splka.org. A letter stating why you are interested in becoming a volunteer keeper, a brief resume outlining previous work and volunteer experience and two letters of reference will also be needed.

Mission Statement

The purpose of Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association (SPLKA) is to restore and preserve Big and Little Sable Lighthouses and the Ludington North Breakwater Light, provide education to the public about the lights, and allow the public to have the opportunity to climb the towers. Volunteers are our strength and are encouraged to play active roles in our program.

By employing over 300 resident lighthouse keepers, we at SPLKA are able to preserve, promote, educate the public, and make the lighthouses open to the global community.
