Asian Women’s Home, the domestic violence and human trafficking program of Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI), is in need of volunteers to support with translation and interpretation. Often the clients we assist have limited knowledge of English, making it difficult for them to fully communicate their needs and have their questions answered. Translation and interpretation is especially needed in the languages listed below; though knowledge of other languages is welcomed. Chinese: Mandarin and Cantonese highly desired. Other dialects a plus. Vietnamese Spanish Korean Cambodian Japanese Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) Tagalog Thai Punjabi Hindi Russian Farsi Other languages Major Responsibilities Interpret and translate from one language into English for either written or spoken purposes. Assist staff with interpretation during appointments, hotline, and as needed Translation of written resources from English into another language. Ability to write, edit, and update resource materials to better serve the community. Qualifications Prior experience as an interpreter or translator preferred; not required. Willingness to give time, interest and energy to fulfill goals of the program. Willingness to work in an environment where clients may be in distress. Ability to work both independently and as part of the team. Flexibility and willingness to work on a variety of tasks. Strong interpersonal communication skills. Time Commitment: A minimum of 6 months, ideally once or twice a week for at least 4 hours or on a project to project basis. Flexible schedule, dependent on program needs and volunteer’s availability. **Note: Due to the nature of our program, volunteer applicants who are interested in working directly with shelter residents must meet the following requirements: Completion of the California State-mandated 40-hour Domestic Violence Advocacy Training. Pass the Live Scan Fingerprinting Background Check. Submit a TB test result.
