Art & Science in One, a program running for its sixth year in spring 2018, is looking for adult volunteers to pair up one-to-one with students in a program that stresses close observation of the outdoor world-flora, fauna, and ecological context.
Participants who join the Art & Science in One volunteer team will learn the elements of nature journaling from a drawing instructor who is also a professional science illustrator. They will apply this training to work with a combined 4th-/5th-grade class at Tobin Montessori School in West Cambridge, a public elementary school. The program takes place for two hours each session, on 8 Fridays beginning April 6, 2018. The program's core consists of outdoor nature journaling sessions at Fresh Pond Reservation, across the street from the school.
The program enables students and their volunteer mentors to experience this significant and exciting habitat and its biodiversity through nature journaling; it also instills enthusiasm for and skills of close scientific observation.
