Art & Science in One, a program running for the sixth year in spring 2018, is looking for adult volunteers to pair up one-to-one with students in a program that stresses close observation of the outdoor world-flora, fauna, and ecological context.
Participants who join the Art & Science in One volunteer team will learn the elements of nature journaling from a drawing instructor who is also a professional science illustrator. They will apply this training to work with a combined 4th-/5th-grade class at Tobin Montessori School in West Cambridge, a public elementary school. The program has run from 11:30-1:30 PM on nine consecutive Fridays between April and June in past years, but this year's program dates are still in development. The program's core consists of three two-hour outdoor nature journaling sessions at Fresh Pond Reservation, across the street from the school.
The program enables students and their volunteer mentors to experience this significant and exciting habitat and its biodiversity through nature journaling; it also instills enthusiasm for scientific observation.
