Day Camp Assistants provide extra eyes, ears and hands to Camp Instructors who facilitate summer camp. Assistant tasks include setting up materials; serving snacks, assisting with games, crafts, tours and other learning activities, clean up; and foremost, watching for the safety of the children.
Day Camp volunteer shifts are: Monday-Friday
8:30 am-12:30 pm or 12:15 pm-4:15 pm, June 11 through August 31
Tue/Thur OR Mon/Wed/Fri shifts or full weeks are possible
Duties:
Provide a positive and encouraging example for children, ranging in age from 4-14.
Provide high quality supervision and engage children during parent pick-up and drop-off, lunch, and daily camp activities.
Support camp instructors by assisting with duties such as classroom set up and clean up, hands-on activities, games, story times, snack, bathroom breaks, and tours through the Zoo and Conservatory.
Responsibilities:
Assist the camp instructor in making campers feel welcome, comfortable, and safe.
Assist the camp instructor in providing a fun, memorable and educational summer camp experience.
Listen, follow instructions, and carry out tasks as assigned. Take initiative - ask how you can be helpful.
Demonstrate respect and kindness around children, parents, Como staff, and fellow volunteers. Use the radio in a professional manner.
- Dress for the weather: be clean and modest in summer wear and wear close-toed shoes.
Follow established procedures when working, as specified in the Volunteer Handbook.
Arrive on time, work scheduled shift or give advance notification of absence.
Fulfill training requirements and provide feedback to supervising staff.
Qualifications:
Be available to volunteer for shifts during 3 weeks over the summer - weekday am or pm
Be an adult or mature youth volunteer (16 years and older).
Submit to and have a positive result on a background check (if you are over 18).
- Be physically able to bend, kneel, and assist 1:1 with tasks
Experience or strong interest in working with children ages 4-14.
- Experience or interest in working in a summer camp setting.
- Interest in plants and animals preferred but not required.
