Help low-income seniors tend to their community garden!

ORGANIZATION: Satellite Affordable Housing Associates

Help our seniors take care of their community garden! In cities such as Oakland, the availability of fresh, affordable produce is limited, making it especially challenging for people living in low-income communities to live healthily. Community gardens provide nutritious and affordable food, thereby improving the health of its care takers, and can also promote a sense of community.

SAHA has recently started several community gardens with our residents and need your help maintaining them. We'll need help watering and pruning plants, pulling weeds, setting mulch and planting seeds. It will also be great to have a fresh face interacting with out residents in a meaningful way. It would also be wonderful if you are interested in teaching residents how to cook local grown foods during the same sessions!

For this program, an interest in gardening and working with seniors is required. It would be helpful if you already have gardening experience, but if you don't, we will gladly teach you. All the gardening supplies will be provided by Satellite Housing.

An on-going commitment of 1-2 hours per week for a minimum of 3 months is required and a longer commitment would be appreciated. Individuals and small groups are welcome.

Knowledge of a Chinese language will be helpful, but is not required.

ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM:SAHA's Volunteer Program is managed by the Volunteer Coordinator, who supports volunteers and supplies all materials needed for the activity. Please note that we are only able to accommodate those with M-F 9AM-5PM availability, with the exception of some One-Time Events. In the interest of offering consistent social activities for our residents, we expect that volunteers will offer activities weekly or twice a month at a regular time and day. Residents greatly appreciate and look forward these activities as well as enjoying the company of volunteers who make them possible. Please sign up today!

ABOUT SAHA: Satellite Affordable Housing Associates is committed to providing quality, service-enriched, affordable housing to East Bay residents. By offering consistent, volunteer-led programing, we hope to build community at each of our properties, providing accessible socialization alternatives and allowing our senior residents to age in place.
