JustREAD

JustREAD provides one-on-one remedial tutoring in English literacy to struggling elementary, middle, and high school students. We serve students who are performing below grade level and/or are English language learners. They thrive on the personalized attention to their academic needs, a structured tutoring environment, and the dedication of caring, volunteer tutors.

We provide one-on-one tutoring, as well as in-classroom tutoring on campus DURING THE SCHOOL DAY at several schools in Mountain View. Tutors receive training and on-going support from a Site Coordinator or teacher in the classroom. Students have individualized lesson plans and instructional materials tailored to their needs.

New tutor orientations are held on an ongoing basis. Sign up for one here:

We request a minimum commitment of one hour per week between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. during the school year.

About JustREAD/JustMATH

Location:

1299 BRYANT AVE, MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA 94040, US

Mission Statement

JustREAD’s mission is to help underperforming students develop the literacy and math skills needed to support lifelong learning. Our trained volunteers provide one-on-one, structured tutoring to students who do not receive academic support at home. Since 2005, hundreds of volunteers have provided over 32,000 tutoring sessions to students in Mountain View, CA.

Description

JustREAD and JustMATH are focused on the development of basic English and math skills. Our caring volunteer tutors impart academic and life skills to their students, providing a safe and nurturing environment for learning. The high school dropout rate in California is 20%. Poverty, linguistic diversity, inadequate school funding and community instability all create barriers to academic success. JustREAD's programs address this educational crisis one student at a time. The students have gaps in their learning. We provide diagnostic testing to identify the gaps, then create customized focus plans for each student. Tutors work one-on-one or in small groups in dedicated classrooms on campus during the school day. Programs run for the academic year. Site coordinators provide ongoing support for tutors and students, and provide the curriculum and structure for the sessions. No prior experience is needed. Many of tutors return year after year because they see first-hand the impact they have on individual students:

JustMATH Student: Tutoring is the #1 thing I look forward to at school. I am so very comfortable there.
JustREAD Student: I love JustREAD! I never wanted to come late to this class.
JustREAD/MATH Tutors: I really appreciate the structure provided and the great site coordinators.
Teacher: This is a great program, and I am very grateful for it! The program was even better and more helpful than I expected!
