Mission Statement

JustREAD’s mission is to help underperforming students develop the literacy and math skills needed to support lifelong learning. Our trained volunteers provide one-on-one, structured tutoring to students who do not receive academic support at home. Since 2005, hundreds of volunteers have provided over 32,000 tutoring sessions to students in Mountain View, CA.

Description

JustREAD and JustMATH are focused on the development of basic English and math skills. Our caring volunteer tutors impart academic and life skills to their students, providing a safe and nurturing environment for learning. The high school dropout rate in California is 20%. Poverty, linguistic diversity, inadequate school funding and community instability all create barriers to academic success. JustREAD's programs address this educational crisis one student at a time. The students have gaps in their learning. We provide diagnostic testing to identify the gaps, then create customized focus plans for each student. Tutors work one-on-one or in small groups in dedicated classrooms on campus during the school day. Programs run for the academic year. Site coordinators provide ongoing support for tutors and students, and provide the curriculum and structure for the sessions. No prior experience is needed. Many of tutors return year after year because they see first-hand the impact they have on individual students:

JustMATH Student: Tutoring is the #1 thing I look forward to at school. I am so very comfortable there.
JustREAD Student: I love JustREAD! I never wanted to come late to this class.
JustREAD/MATH Tutors: I really appreciate the structure provided and the great site coordinators.
Teacher: This is a great program, and I am very grateful for it! The program was even better and more helpful than I expected!

At JustRead working with English-challenged students, I am proudest of elevating one student 5 grade levels in one school year, by providing one-on-one attention along with other tutors, on materials meticulously prepared by staff. I've self-improved on patience, tenacity, compassion, even English comprehension, among others. A great experience!

Participating in this program couldn't be easier or more rewarding. The lesson plans are so straightforward and flexible. Just show up and read and talk with your student. Working with the same student from week to week allows you to see the progress. I've had a fantastic experience!

JustREAD is well organized. We tutor in our own room with students who are identified by the teachers as needing extra help. Materials are plentiful and communication is excellent. Students are delightful, coming from many backgrounds and all appreciating the extra help.

I have tutored in Just Math for 5 years. It has been very satisfying to help elementary and middle school students build their skills and confidence. The program has also been extremely flexible at working around my other commitments.

Working with JustREAD students is a lot fun and helps students succeed in elevating their reading skills. Working one-on-one helps the students build confidence in reading and comprehension. I enjoy giving back to students who want to learn.

I strongly recommend JustREAD because I believe in the excellent work it does to help students who are struggling in class and may be potential drop-outs. There is such a need for one-on-one intervention that teachers do not have time nor training to provide. This organization has created a structured curriculum that is easy for tutors and fun for kids. 100% of the JustREAD students last year passed the Exit Exam and graduated.

JustRead offers something special-the luxury of one-on-one attention. Working with the same student during the school year builds a bond of trust. Students are not judged or worried about asking the wrong questions. After each session, I feel like I have made an important contribution, and the students really appreciate it. These are kids that want to learn!
