The Redemption Song Foundation (RSF) is seeking a full-time volunteer to join us in Uganda for 3, 6 or 12 months to begin a preschool for Batwa children. This is a full-time all-volunteer position. You will be a preschool teacher, helping the young children who have struggled in regular school to succeed in learning to read and write, count and work with numbers. They do not speak English, but English is the national language and they are expected to learn. Our staff can help you with translation for the kids.
You will work with an all-Ugandan staff (2 speak English and are used to working with Westerners), have a place to stay (if you are female), meals, and a life-changing experience.
For more info about RSF visit http://www.redemptionsongfoundation.org, or our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/redemptionsongfoundation.
RSF is a (US) 501c3 nonprofit organization with our "base" a few km outside of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to critically endangered mountain gorillas, as well as a small community of indigenous Batwa "pygmies." The Batwa are struggling to survive and thrive since the park’s creation. Here’s an article I (founder/director Wendee Nicole) wrote about the situation before I moved here: http://www.takepart.com/feature/2014/11/25/conservation-refugees-of-uganda-batwa-mountain-gorillas.
You will be required to pay your way here (airfares can be as low as $860 from the US to Uganda). We are based in a very remote village (the nearest bank is 1 hour away, for example), and we have no vehicles, but there are motorcycles to transport you safely, and there are several tourist lodges in the vicinity that allow visitors for dinner or drinks. One of the best hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa is right here, Bwindi Community Hospital for your health and safety but also it can serve as a place to meet friends, have fellowship opportunities, etc. The RSF house has solar power, cold showers (we are working on this), and flush toilets.
An ideal candidate has previous experience living in Africa - or other developing nations, a positive, can-do attitude and a solid work ethic.

Mission Statement
Spreading hope by growing healthy communities and sustainable ecosystems in Africa
Description
Working near Bwindi Impenetrable Park in southwestern Uganda, RSF is a newly formed organization whose work unites poverty alleviation and the protection of the forests on which both local people and wildlife depend.
Based on the work of Nobel-Prize-winning economist Elinor Ostrom, RSF's activiites focus on grassroots community development based on trust and cooperation. We have projects to holistically support the Batwa ("Twa") pygmy families in SW Uganda, including health, hygiene & family planning education, an Educational Soup Kitchen for the kids, and artisan co-ops to generate personal income and RSF-funds for projects. We also support a local school (Rugando Parents Primary School) through facilitating a cultural exchange with schools in the US, providing reusable menstrual pads to keep girls in school, and we helped build their 5th grade classroom. Other projects are underway!
