Mission Statement

Spreading hope by growing healthy communities and sustainable ecosystems in Africa

Description

Working near Bwindi Impenetrable Park in southwestern Uganda, RSF is a newly formed organization whose work unites poverty alleviation and the protection of the forests on which both local people and wildlife depend.

Based on the work of Nobel-Prize-winning economist Elinor Ostrom, RSF's activiites focus on grassroots community development based on trust and cooperation. We have projects to holistically support the Batwa ("Twa") pygmy families in SW Uganda, including health, hygiene & family planning education, an Educational Soup Kitchen for the kids, and artisan co-ops to generate personal income and RSF-funds for projects. We also support a local school (Rugando Parents Primary School) through facilitating a cultural exchange with schools in the US, providing reusable menstrual pads to keep girls in school, and we helped build their 5th grade classroom. Other projects are underway!

I have been a volunteer for RSF since 2016 and it's the best thing ever! I've learned so much from writing to sponsors to working on our online store. Volunteering for RSF definitely gave me a lot of experience doing so many different tasks. I really enjoyed getting to know the ins and outs of a non profit organization and also getting to know the every day lives of the batwa. Wendee, the founder of RSF has taught me a lot and she is a sweetheart! She will guide you through all the things you need to know and what you have to do. This has been truly a great experience for me. I'm proud to be part of the RSF team!
