Paws to Read: Join our Tail-Wagging Team for Reading Fun with Therapy Dogs!

"Everyone thinks they have the best dog, and none of them are wrong." This position involves sitting with your therapy certified dog (see qualifications below) while beginner/struggling readers read books out loud. Children have 15 minute private sessions, with a maximum of four children per evening or afternoon session. About you: Handlers are encouraged to sign up for one 2 hour shift per month, possibly more as needed. Sessions are: - every Monday afternoon - the second and fourth Saturday afternoons of each month Teams must be certified through a nationally recognized therapy organization, preferably R.E.A.D. certified. The dogs must be friendly and reliable around little children. Handlers must love books and working with beginner readers. From Seedlings to Blooms: Join the Greenhouse Crew for a Year-Round Floral Adventure!

What to expect: February into April: Transplant seedlings in the greenhouse April and early May: Prepare soil for planting End of May into June: Load up plants in greenhouse; take plant out to flower beds in various city parks; plant the plants Through out summer: Weed and maintain the flower beds End of summer through October: Clean up the flower beds removing dead plants. Winter duties vary depending on projects. About You: Work activities occur both inside and sometimes in inclement weather. Requires bending, balancing, crouching, stooping, lifting, reaching, standing, walking and sitting due to the physical nature of planting flower beds. Volunteer will receive full instruction on planting and growing techniques of annual flowers. Requires a minimum of 5 hours a day for 6 weeks. Must be 16 years of age. Ability to perform physical work in outdoor conditions. Desire for "hands-on" experience in flower bed planting and greenhouse work. I am currently working with Tom Pageler who is supervising the "Map Scanning" project. He is a excellent leader and works with his volunteers. Between Tom and Larry, they will coach you on building a deliverable that is useful for multiple departments to the City of Westminster. They are open to suggestions and incorporate the best ideas whenever possible. I would recommend volunteering, Keith M. Krause+
