Volunteer Services "free" transportation to low income seniors and individuals with a disability in all of Southwest Washington. https://ccsww.org/volunteer/ We provide a mileage reimbursement for transporting our clients to and from doctors appointments, shopping and essential errands. Our scheduling is done with a easy to use computer program so you are able to volunteer on YOUR time. Nativity House Shelter is looking for volunteers with specific language skills and we need your help! We need volunteers who speak Spanish. There are obviously great translation apps available but human connection matters A LOT in the work that we do. We need volunteers who can help translate between staff and shelter guests so we can understand what guests need and help meet those needs more effectively. We're looking for volunteers who can greet guests, help serve on the food line, run the clothing bank, and/or generally assist shelter staff in the Day Center. Scheduling is flexible but we're looking for bilingual volunteers for roles that have direct interactions with the the people we serve. What to know: Nativity House Shelter is a 167-bed shelter for adult men & women experiencing homelessness. The shelter is not a family shelter (no kids) The shelter consists of an overnight shelter (with gender specific dorms) and a Day Center where anyone is welcome from 7 am to 4:30 pm. We serve meals 3 times per day All services are free The shelter is staffed 24/7 and is open every day. How to get started Interested in joining our volunteer team? Once your volunteer registration has been received, our volunteer coordinator processes a background check (done at no cost to volunteers) and contacts references by phone or email. Once that’s compete, you’ll be invited to attend an orientation and can start scheduling volunteer shifts based on what you want to do and your availability. Scheduling is flexible. The Basics Volunteers MUST be at least 18 years old to volunteer at the shelter Volunteers must sign a Covid-19 liability waiver in order to participate Volunteers must pass a background check (Washington State Patrol & NSOPW- National Sex Offender Public Website) Volunteers working with food are required to wear gloves for food safety purposes (HUGE plus if you have a food handlers permit) Why it matters As Maya Angelou said, "I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." It is very hard to ask for help, especially when English may not be your first language. Bi-lingual volunteers can help us bridge language barriers, help us understand nuanced situations, and help get guests the assistance they need. There's also something to be said about just making people feel safe and welcome in our space. That piece matters a lot. Covid-19 Safety Masking requirements have been dropped as of March 2023 but mask are still available for volunteers who wish to wear them. We will not ask your vaccination status. Anyone presenting Covid-19 symptoms or generally not feeling well must stay home until they are well again.

Volunteer Services help seniors and people with disabilities stay in their own homes as long as possible. Many have yards or flower beds that need attending and they are no longer able to take care of them. As an older individual myself, I know how good it feels to look at my yard after it is all mowed and the flowers are blooming in the beds. Help us make that happen for a senior or person with a disability near you. Please take an hour or two to help one of our clients. Some even have their own equipment, but no longer can push them!

Help deliver food!!! Nativity House Shelter NEEDS weekend food delivery drivers and is working to build a roster of "reserve" drivers for when our regular weekday drivers take vacation or call out sick. Volunteer drivers are needed on Saturday mornings and occasional weekdays to deliver meals from Nativity House Shelter to various Catholic Community Services shelter sites in Tacoma (all located close to each other- 10 to 15 min. between stops). The delivery route takes approximately 1 hour to complete but all volunteers hours are counted round trip (door to door). Food is picked up at Nativity House at 10:30 am on Saturdays and at 10:15 am on weekdays. (There is some flexibility to those times if needed). Volunteers deliver pre-packed boxes of sandwiches and prepared meals to each of the sites on their route. Lifting is minimal (20-30 lb. food boxes) and CCS staff can generally help load and unload at each stop. Volunteers will need to use their own private vehicles for food transport & provide proof of valid auto insurance. Mileage is reimbursed at $0.51/mile (roundtrip) and additional auto insurance coverage is provided on top of private auto insurance. Helpful to know: While it is always helpful to have volunteers with trucks or SUVs, you DO NOT need a big vehicle. Everything can generally fit in a small to midsize sedan. Come Cook With Friends! Do you and your friends love to cook? Consider recruiting a small group of friends to come cook and serve meals at Nativity House Shelter. Scheduling is flexible and we're happy to work with groups to meet volunteers where they are. We realize that volunteers have busy lives and we'll work with you to design a plan that fits busy schedules. Nativity House is an overnight shelter & day center for men and women actively experiencing homelessness in Tacoma. The Nativity House Kitchen serves approx. 120-200 meals per meal time. We need volunteers who know how cook for a crowd or who can scale up recipes. Groups often do meals like pancakes, casseroles, spaghetti & meatballs, and Sloppy Joes. Groups are encouraged to use ingredients available in the kitchen to build a menu and/or donate heir own ingredients based on what they want to cook. If groups are more comfortable serving instead of cooking- we can work with that too. The Nativity House Kitchen provides breakfast, lunch and dinner, 7 days a week, 365 days per year so there is alwaysan opportunity to serve.
