There are few free, confidential services directed to the monolingual Spanish speaking population of California, in which they can disclose feelings of suicide. Due to the stigmatized nature of suicide and self-harm in the Latino community, San Francisco Suicide Prevention's Linea de Crisis is vital in allowing a space for Spanish speakers to seek support for these feelings.
Linea de Crisis is a program of San Francisco Suicide Prevention that operates daily 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Each Linea de Crisis volunteer is required to work one regular four-hour shift a week. You will answer crisis calls from Spanish speakers and offer the support, information and referrals they need.
All Linea de Crisis volunteers need to also have strong English skills, seeing as they will answer English calls when Spanish ones are not incoming.
Training is provided five times a year, and involves 56 hours of lecture, role play, and on-shift supervision. All training and crisis line work is done on the premises of San Francisco Suicide Prevention.
